STUDY BASICS

Healthy volunteers are needed to participate in a single-visit, 2-hour research study! If you are a healthy adult between the ages of 33-60, and do NOT have diabetes, you may be able to participate. Participants must fast overnight before the visit. Compensation and parking provided.

STUDY PURPOSE
Higher levels of the “good” cholesterol called HDL are thought to protect against heart disease, but recent studies have shown that this is not always the case. These findings suggest that in certain situations HDL does not function well. The purpose of this study is to evaluate HDL levels and HDL function in people with and without diabetes to help researchers understand why people with type 1 diabetes are at greater risk for heart disease. The study will also help researchers understand why certain variants of a genetic marker called haptoglobin may increase heart disease risk in people with type 1 diabetes but not in people without diabetes. Researchers hope that results from this study will help to develop better ways to prevent heart disease in people with diabetes.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Ages 33-60
  • Non-Hispanic Caucasian
  • Not diagnosed with diabetes

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
This study involves one 2-hour visit. Participants must fast overnight before the study visit, and will be provided with breakfast during the visit. Participation includes a finger stick test for diabetes, blood and urine collection, a questionnaire, electrocardiogram (ECG) test, and other physical assessments.
