Visual Recovery after Brain Injury - Healthy Volunteer 14-17
STUDY BASICS
Are you the parent of a healthy 14-17 year old? Your teen may be eligible to participate in a research study to better our understanding about how different brains process information, and whether the same brain regions are used in children, adults, and in people with brain injuries. This is an MRI study with a task/game. Compensation is provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
This research study is designed to help us understand which brain regions are important for different types of information processing and whether the same regions are used if you have a brain injury when you are very young.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOUR CHILD?
- Age 14 to 17 years old
- Right-handed
- Normal or corrected to normal vision
- Native English speaker (learned from birth)
- Comfortable in a confined space (MRI scanner) and not claustrophobic
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
The study will include one session (1-1.5 hours) of MRI scanning. Your child will lie in the MRI scanner and the researcher will present information through headphones and on a screen. Your child will respond by pressing a button. During this experiment your child will need to lie very still and keep their eyes open. The brain MRI scan requires their head to be secured by cushions inside a special helmet to reduce movement, and may not be comfortable for individuals who are sensitive to tight spaces. Overall, the visit will take about 2 hours, including practising the task before entering the MRI magnet.
