STUDY BASICS

Are you 55 years old or older and currently having depression symptoms? You may be eligible for a research study to compare two different therapy approaches on mood and sleep. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two talk therapy programs that include meeting with a study clinician (in person or virtual) for 30-50 minutes each week for 8 weeks (8 sessions total). Compensation provided.

STUDY PURPOSE

The purpose is to compare two different therapy approaches on mood and sleep.

COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Age 55 years or older
  • Already taking, or willing to take, antidepressant medication from your doctor

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

If you participate in the AIMS Trial, you will be asked to complete three main study visits (in person or virtual) where you’ll complete assessments about your sleep, mood, cognition and health. You will also be asked to wear an ActiGraph watch that tracks your sleep and activity. These would be before the therapy program begins, right after it ends and six months later.

After the baseline visit, you will be randomly assigned one of two talk therapy approaches that are designed to support your mood. Each therapy approach includes a one-hour weekly session with a therapist over 8 weeks. During the therapy period, we would ask you to continue wearing the ActiGraph watch We would also ask you to answer questions on the phone with study staff every other week (these would take about 30-40 minutes) After your last therapy session, we would repeat the phone assessments once a month until the last main visit occurs (six-months after therapy ends).

Stephen Smagula

Stephen Smagula, PhD, is an Associate Professor in Psychiatry and Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh. A graduate of Lafayette College, Columbia University, and the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Smagula’s research interests include clarifying how sleep-wake behaviors influence the biological mechanisms of depression. He uses activity tracking to better understand the sleep-wake patterns relevant to mood.
