STUDY BASICS

Have you been diagnosed with cirrhosis, and have you been living with chronic pain? You may be able to participate in a study that will evaluate the use of a health education program for patients with cirrhosis. Compensation is provided.

STUDY PURPOSE

We are conducting this research to evaluate the use of a health education program called Liver Education About Pain (LEAP) for patients with cirrhosis. This study is testing LEAP to find out if it's doable for people in real life, before conducting an efficacy trial (a study to find out how effective LEAP is). Your participation helps us learn more about how to help patients with cirrhosis better manage their chronic pain safely and effectively.

COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?

Eligible participants:

  • Are diagnosed with cirrhosis
  • Receive care from a UPMC hepatology clinic
  • Experience chronic pain (3+ months)

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

Liver Education About Pain (LEAP) is a 12-week program with weekly meetings in groups and individual sessions focused on pain, new ways to improve on what you have already been doing, and keeping track of what you have learned and how you are doing with your pain.

Your participation would involve:

  • Weekly 1-hour sessions over the phone or online.
  • Completing workbook activities discussed in each session.
  • Four (4) data collection surveys/interviews: at the time of enrollment, 6 weeks after the intervention begins, 12 weeks after the intervention begins, and at three months post-intervention.
  • Study participation ends after the three-month post-intervention survey.
