PPAL Field Trial
STUDY BASICS
Do you require assistance or provide assistance with toilet or commode transfers? You may be eligible for a research study to evaluate the PPAL bedside commode in a home setting to better understand the impact of the device in a 6-week at home trial. Compensation is provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
The PPAL is an innovative bedside commode that features built-in transfer boards and height adjustability functions. The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the usability of the PPAL in home environments.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
Care recipients:
- At least 18 years or older
- Weigh 300lbs or less
- Require assistance with toilet or commode transfers
- Must be able to sit upright without human support or getting dizzy.
Caregivers:
- Must serve as a caregiver at least 3 days a week
- Must regularly provide assistance to the care recipient for toilet or commode transfers.
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
The research study involves the 6-Week independent use of the PPAL in your home. Throughout the 6-Week study period, you will be asked to use the PPAL as your primary toileting method. At the end of the study period, you will be asked to complete surveys and interviews regarding your experience using the PPAL.

Alicia Koontz
Dr. Alicia Koontz is a Professor at the University of Pittsburgh and VA Research Career Scientist and Senior Associate Director of Research at the VA Pittsburgh HealthCare System Human Engineering Research Laboratories. She is an Elected Fellow to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and a RESNA certified Assistive Technology Professional and Rehabilitation Engineering Technologist. Dr. Koontz has over 20 years of experience in research with grant funding from multiple federal agencies, corporate sponsors and foundations. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed materials in top-tier rehabilitation, engineering and biomechanics journals. Her research interests are in rehabilitation biomechanics, injury prevention, adaptive fitness and assistive technology.
