STUDY BASICS

Are you an 18-year-old adult male who has had a mild orthopedic injury within the past 11 days (includes leg/arm injuries and/or other body injuries such as sprains and strains that do not require hospitalization or surgical interventions)? You may be eligible for a research study to improve understanding of how the brain recovers after a concussion in adolescents. Compensation is provided.


STUDY PURPOSE

The purpose of this research study is to examine possible differences in the brain functioning and structure of youth with and without concussion. This study uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to look at how the brain works and saliva to assess levels of pubertal hormones.


COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • 18 years old male
  • had a mild orthopedic injury within the past 11 days (includes leg/arm injuries and/or other body injuries such as sprains and strains that do not require hospitalization or surgical interventions)
  • Right-handed
  • No metal implants

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

If you are found to be eligible, there will be 4 visits over the course of 6 months.

  • MRI 
    • The MRI visit is the longest (about 2 hours).  It will consist of a 1-hour MRI scan.  During that visit, you will be asked to complete surveys regarding your symptoms, moods, and behaviors.
  • Follow up at 4 weeks, 3 months* and 6 months
    • The follow-up visits will be fully remote (about 30 minutes)  
    • You will complete surveys regarding your mood and behavior.  
    • *There will be an optional second MRI at the 3-month visit.
