Estrogen Deficiency Study - Ages 50-65 years old
STUDY BASICS
Are you 50 to 65 years old and have gone through menopause? You may be eligible for a research study investigating the effects of low estrogen on bone health and sleep quality. Participation includes only a single study visit which will include a bone density scan and blood draw. Compensation provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
The purpose of this research study is to better understand whether low estrogen levels contribute to poor sleep and low bone density.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
- 50-65 years of age
- At least 5 years post menopause
- Not on hormone replacement therapy
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
One study visit, lasting approximately 2-3 hours. Research procedures include:
- medical history
- physical
- urine pregnancy test
- bone density (DXA) scan
- one blood draw (approximately 7 tablespoons)
- one 24-hour urine cortisol test
- questionnaires about sleep, depression, and anxiety

Pouneh K. Fazeli, MD, MPH, is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Pittsburgh. A graduate of Harvard University, Dr. Fazeli’s research interests include understanding both the benefits and negative consequences of undernutrition.
