STEPS: Streamlined Training for Enhanced Physical Strength
STUDY BASICS
Are you 65 years of age or older and have difficulty walking? You may be eligible for a research study to evaluate the effectiveness of a brief strength training program. Participants will be assigned to either a brief strength training program (immediately) or a delayed-treatment group that will start in a year. Participation also involves 3 visits to test your physical performance and balance.
STUDY PURPOSE
The purpose of this voluntary research study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a brief strength training program for older adults who experience difficulty walking.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
- Are 65 years of age or older
- Have serious difficulty walking 3 blocks
- Are not exercising regularly
- Have no medical reason(s) that prevent you from exercising
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
The research study will last 12-18 months.
- You will be provided access to an exercise intervention that you will do at home, featuring brief strength and balance exercises.
- You will be asked to come to the University of Pittsburgh 3 times throughout the study to test your functional physical performance and balance.
- You will be asked to wear an ActivPal device that measures activity for 7 days 3 times throughout the study.
- You will be asked to answer surveys electronically throughout the study.
