STUDY BASICS
Are you 70 years old or older? You may be eligible for a research study to test whether a medication that blocks inflammation can improve energy level and walking ability. Compensation is provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
The RIGHT study will examine the effects of clazakizumab (5 mg per month), a medication that blocks inflammation, on energy level and walking ability of older adults over a six-month period. Clazakizumab has been used for the treatment of other conditions with inflammation, such as rheumatoid arthritis. It is currently approved only for experimental use by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration).
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
Eligible participants:
- Are 70 years old or older
- Have high levels of inflammation markers in the blood (that are not due to any specific illness)
- Are able to attend monthly visits at our clinic for seven months
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
If you are eligible for this study, you will be randomly assigned (much like the flip of a coin) to one of two groups: active drug or placebo.
A placebo is a substance that looks like and is given in the same way as the active medicine but contains no medicine. A placebo is used in research studies to show what effect a treatment has compared with taking nothing at all.
You will receive an injection of either clazakizumab (5 mg per month) or placebo every 4 weeks (monthly) for 24 weeks (6 months) beginning at the Baseline Randomization Visit. You will also be contacted by phone every 4 weeks for 20 weeks (monthly for 5 months) after the last study visit.
