Are you age 70 or older and currently exercise for less than one hour per week? If so, you may be able to participate in a research study to help find out if taking nitrite capsules can improve muscle health and help older adults become more active. Participation involves nine visits over four months. Compensation and parking pass provided.
Immune response to influenza vaccine in middle-aged adults
We are seeking adults 50-70 years old who plan to receive an influenza (flu) vaccine from a UPMC doctor or a pharmacy offering FDA licensed egg-free type flu vaccine. This study will involve 3 study visits with blood draws, each fall for 3 flu seasons (2022-2024). We are especially interested in how people with different body weights respond to the flu vaccine.
Bone Adaptations to Physical Training
The primary purpose is to determine the bone density, structure and strength adaptations that result from various exercise programs which differ based on the frequency and intensity of bone loading. Subjects will complete 24 weeks of resistance training or maintain their current activity level without beginning any formal exercise training program and participate in laboratory visits.

FIT BOLD Research Study
Did you recover from depression in the past two years? Are you age 60 or older? You may be able to participate in a research study to help better understand how lifestyle modification affects the brain in recently depressed older adults. Participants will take part in one of two healthy lifestyle programs, each facilitated by a personal coach. Compensation and travel reimbursement is provided.
Are you age 30 or older? You may be able to participate in an at-home study of muscle training to investigate the effect of muscle strengthening on bone, sleep, and quality of life. This study involves 3 in-person visits to the Duquesne University campus and daily muscle training (15 minutes) over 6 months. Eligible participants must have no condition that would limit their ability to exercise.
